Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.
We present a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like standard biological terror, but inside Together resides a deep contemplation about our choices in loving one another.
A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics
Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.
The narrative starts when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Paranormal Spark
While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.
The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.
Complex Characterizations
A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.
The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.
Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. At their core, they still love one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.
Allegory and Meaning
While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.
A Debated Finale
Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can undertake right now.
Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
